AV1 is a modern open video codec designed to deliver strong quality at lower bitrates than older formats. It is attractive for archives, web delivery and large libraries, but it is not automatically the right answer: encoding can be slow, older devices may not decode it, and hardware support varies widely.

When AV1 is a good choice

  • You control the playback software or target recent browsers/devices.
  • Storage or bandwidth matters more than encoding speed.
  • You can test hardware or software AV1 encoding on representative footage.
  • The workflow does not require a legacy editor or television.

H.264 remains safer when a file must play almost anywhere. HEVC often occupies the middle ground: efficient, widely hardware-accelerated, but subject to platform and licensing differences.

MP4 AV1 or WebM AV1?

Container choice depends on the delivery chain. MP4 can fit existing publishing and device workflows; WebM is established in web-oriented pipelines. Check whether your specific player accepts AV1 in the chosen container, including audio and subtitles. A file can use AV1 correctly and still fail because the container or companion streams are unsupported.

A practical AV1 encoding workflow

  1. Start with a short source segment containing motion, faces, texture and gradients.
  2. Choose an AV1 preset while keeping resolution and frame rate unchanged.
  3. Encode a quality-oriented sample. Record time, file size and whether hardware acceleration was used.
  4. Decode the sample completely and inspect it at normal viewing distance.
  5. Compare against H.264 or H.265 at a similar visual quality, not merely the same numeric quality value.
  6. Only then process the full queue.

Hardware AV1 support

Recent Intel, NVIDIA and AMD hardware may accelerate AV1 encoding or decoding, but the exact capability depends on GPU generation, driver and codec path. “Hardware acceleration available” does not guarantee that every selected combination uses it. Measure the actual job and watch for a software fallback.

Is AV1 right for archival video?

Compression efficiency is useful, but an archive also needs documented settings, multiple verified copies and a playback migration plan. Keep a high-quality master when the source is important. AV1 can be a distribution or space-efficient preservation copy; it should not erase the only original simply because its file is smaller.
