Import a clip. Choose MP4. Open the finished video.

These are current Free Video Converter 8.1.0 screens from this website's application. The four-second test pattern was created for this guide and converted with the published app.

1. Add and check your source

Select Video or drag a local video into the queue. Read the source resolution, codec, duration and audio details on the row. Select MP4 · H.264 along the bottom when you want an everyday playback copy.

Adding a file prepares the job; it does not change your original. A MOV or MKV file is the input container, while MP4 is the output container you choose.

2. Review format, quality and Save to

Open Output settings. Start with Same as source for resolution and frame rate unless you need a smaller copy. Check the audio setting and Save to destination. The actual H.264 settings are shown here.

Use Save settings to return to the queue, or Save & convert to start. A larger frame size cannot recover detail missing from your source. Hardware acceleration depends on a compatible detected encoder.

Choose the output format and review the Save to folder before starting conversion. Click to enlarge.

3. Convert, then check the saved copy

Select Convert and wait for the row to say Completed. Use Open output on the completed row or Open output folder at the bottom. Play the file and check picture, sound, duration and orientation before replacing any original.

For a batch, check each item's result and the overall failed count. A successful first file does not mean every queued file succeeded.

Convert to a format that fits

Make an MP4 for everyday playback, an MKV with compatible tracks, a WebM for a website or a MOV for an editing workflow. Choose H.264 for broad compatibility, or HEVC and AV1 for modern playback. The app makes the container and codec visible, so you know what you are creating.

  • Common video and audio outputs in one queue
  • Source resolution or selected resolution and frame rate
  • Compatible MKV remux without re-encoding

Bring online videos into the same queue

Paste a permitted public video link and click Read formats. Best available quality is the easy starting point; you can also choose an available source video stream and audio track. Add the video with its title and preview image, then select the output in the main window. Downloading starts only when you click Convert.

  • Input quality and output format stay clearly separate
  • Explicit playlist import for supported links
  • Help-menu updates and a useful update prompt after download errors

Prepare video for devices and creative work

Start with profiles for Apple, Android, Smart TV, PlayStation and other playback workflows. Creators can use 4K profiles, ProRes or Motion JPEG editing files and FFV1 archival output. Preserve existing high-resolution sources with suitable HEVC or AV1 profiles, and choose how compatible HDR should be handled.

  • Device, web, production and audio preset categories
  • Detected NVIDIA, Intel and AMD encoders where supported
  • Software encoding when a compatible GPU path is unavailable

Trim precisely. Join in your order.

Use the timeline, frame stepping and exact time fields to keep the section you need. Add several keep ranges, split at the playhead and reorder the segments. Export them separately or combine them. To join different files, arrange the queue and turn on Join files.

  • Multiple keep segments with Undo and Redo
  • Mixed sizes and frame rates normalized for encoded joins
  • Automatic, encoded or eligible lossless join strategies

Reframe and personalize the picture

Draw a crop directly on the preview, adjust the edges or choose a familiar aspect ratio. Rotate a sideways recording, flip the image or add your own PNG logo. Drag the watermark into position and adjust its size and opacity. The app adds no product watermark of its own.

  • 16:9, 4:3, square and vertical crop options
  • 90°, 180° and 270° rotation plus flips
  • Brightness, contrast, color, denoise, sharpen and fades

Control quality and file size

Prepare a video for sharing or save space with quality, bitrate and target-size controls. Choose a smaller resolution when you do not need the original dimensions. Supported software encoders offer two-pass processing, and target-size jobs check the result before completing.

  • Constant quality, average bitrate or target size
  • Separate video and audio bitrate controls
  • Preview a short encoded sample before a long conversion

Extract audio and fine-tune the sound

Save a video soundtrack as MP3, AAC/M4A, FLAC, WAV, Ogg or Opus, or choose ALAC and AC-3 profiles for a specific workflow. Select the tracks to keep. Adjust gain, reduce steady background noise, add fades or normalize loudness when your source needs it.

  • Audio conversion and individual track extraction
  • 16-bit and 24-bit WAV output profiles
  • Noise reduction, compression and loudness controls

Keep subtitles useful

Select audio and subtitle tracks, keep compatible subtitles selectable or burn captions into the picture. Subtitle Studio lets you edit SRT and ASS text, correct cue times, shift subtitles and preview their appearance on a real video frame. Save the edited subtitle file for another project.

  • Subtitle font, color, outline, shadow and position
  • External SRT, ASS, SSA and VTT burn-in
  • Track language, title and default flags

Create DVD and Blu-ray outputs

Build a DVD-Video project with ordered titles and interactive chapter menus, then create a VIDEO_TS folder or ISO. For Blu-ray, arrange titles into a continuous playlist with chapters and generate BDMV folders or UDF 2.50 ISO images. Optional Windows disc burning depends on your drive and system.

  • DVD menu themes, PAL/NTSC and capacity choices
  • Blu-ray folder and ISO creation with chapter navigation
  • Import logical titles from unencrypted disc folders

Handle a whole batch with less repetition

Use one output setup for the queue or give individual jobs their own profiles and folders. Apply compatible settings across selected files, pause after the current job and retry a failed item from its log. Save a custom preset when you want the same result next time.

  • Searchable presets, favorites and recent choices
  • Per-job quality, size and track settings
  • Output names avoid silently replacing existing files

Keep useful tools close at hand

Save a video frame as an image or export a timed image sequence. Edit chapter markers, revisit conversion history or save the queue as a project. Automatic queue recovery helps you return to unfinished work. Watch folders and command-line conversion support repeatable local tasks.

  • Audio and subtitle extraction, plus PNG/JPEG/WebP frames
  • Projects, history and CSV export
  • Watch folders and scriptable local conversion

Online quality is the input

The URL dialog chooses what to download. The main window chooses what to create. After a source downloads, you can reopen it for editing and output-sample preview.

Lossless has a specific meaning

Compatible remux and eligible joins can copy existing streams. Changing codecs, cropping or applying filters normally requires encoding.

Preview before you commit

Questions before you download?

Is Free Video Converter free, and does it add a watermark?

The conversion app is free to use and adds no product watermark. You can optionally add your own PNG image watermark. Setup may present a separately disclosed optional RelevantKnowledge offer; you can decline that offer and continue installing Free Video Converter.

Which format should I choose for everyday playback?

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is a practical starting point for many phones, TVs and computers. HEVC and AV1 need compatible playback hardware or software. Use the device profiles as a starting point and check your specific device requirements.

Can I convert MKV, MOV or AVI to MP4?

Yes. Add a readable source file, choose MP4 · H.264 or another suitable MP4 profile, select the output folder and click Convert. Compatible audio and subtitle handling depends on your output settings and the source tracks.

How do I make a video file smaller?

Open Output settings and choose quality, bitrate or target file size. A smaller resolution or a more efficient compatible codec may also help. Size and picture quality depend on the source and settings; check an encoded sample before converting a long file.

Can I trim and join without losing quality?

Some compatible joins and MKV remux operations can copy the original streams. The app checks whether stream copying is suitable. Cropping, filters, normalization and many exact editing operations require encoding, so lossless output is not available for every task.

When does an online video download?

Adding a link reads its title, thumbnail and available input formats. The video and audio media download when you click Convert. Choose the download quality in the URL dialog and choose the final output format in the main window. Downloaded sources can then be edited locally.

What if a YouTube or other online source stops working?

Use the download error window or the Help menu to check for a newer download module, then retry. You can turn startup update checks on or off. Site support can change, and private, login-only, subscription or DRM-protected media is not supported. Download only media you own or have permission to use.

Does it upload my local videos?

Local file conversion runs on your Windows PC. The conversion app does not upload media to a cloud service or read browser cookies and saved logins. Online sources and module updates require an internet connection. Any separate optional installer offer has its own privacy terms.

Can I edit subtitles or create DVD and Blu-ray images?

Yes. Subtitle Studio edits SRT and ASS text, timing and styling; compatible subtitles can be retained or burned in. DVD authoring creates menus, VIDEO_TS folders and ISO images. Blu-ray authoring creates a continuous playlist with chapters, BDMV folders and ISO images; it does not create interactive Blu-ray menus.

What are the Windows requirements?

Use 64-bit Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11, with Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime 8 x64. Setup offers the official Microsoft runtime download when needed. Allow enough free space for source downloads, outputs and optional editing-preview files.
